about herod.net

herod.net is the personal work of Steven and Belinda Herod, a play pen, a 'petrie dish' in which our random and not so random flights of fancy are deposited

Technically speaking...

herod.net is created on Belinda's 3 year old P100 (48MB RAM, 6.5GB HDD), which goes to prove that in spite of Intels marketing department, you can still play an active role on the internet without a PIII 700Mhz monster.

Actually, since December 2000.... we've been using a Gateway PIII 800Mhz (monster).. so marketing@intel.com should feel satisfied. At least we now have the (minor) miracle of USB and can get our color printing times down from over an hour....

Wow, it's been a while between updates, Now using P4 2.4Ghz Dell Inspiron 8500 (1GB RAM, 60GB HDD), but I'm still writing this in vi on the server :)

Whats the process?

For most of the pages on this site, a layout is produced in Dreamweaver 4.0 to get the basic look and feel sorted out. Graphics are created in Photoshop and then tweaked for smaller size using Fireworks and then inserted using dreamweaver into the pages. Tweaking of the HTML and now more frequently CSS changes are then done in an excellent little text editor called Ultra-Edit, because try as I might, I just can't seem to stop editing stuff by hand.

I've also adopted the method of page creation my (former) employer uses, which seems to be more in vogue for graphic centric web pages, the entire web page is done out in Photoshop as one big image, and then cut up using Fireworks with the textual elements replaced with real text.

The site is now barely maintained :) I still use Ultra-Edit + vi + numerous open source packages like gallery, moveable type, phpBB - Why write your own when there are so many good freebies!

this page given another prod December 2005, and corrected to xhtml, css2 and 508 accessibility standards
